Heni Te Kiri Karamu was born in 1840. By then her people had turned away from their waring practises and embraced the Christian faith.
At the Gate Pa siege she was allowed to stay in the village because she was a skilled warrior. Surviving a cannon barrage she heard a soldier calling for help in the open land between them. Shots were still being fired. What should she do? Or more specifically…..what would Jesus do?
Grabbing a water canister she risked her life to run out to a soldier, a Colonel H.J.P. Booth, where she cupped her hands and gently poured water into his mouth. Hearing the cries of more wounded government soldiers, she continued to do the same for them.
It was Jesus who said; Love your enemies.
