Appreciation

It seems most men fall short on giving words of appreciation, especially to their spouse or children. Our Victorian heritage doesn’t help where men never told their children, “I love you.” Having not heard that ourselves, many find it strange to even say it and so another generation passes all the poorer.

Thomas Carlyle, a famous Scottish philosopher, had a very devoted wife who sacrificed everything for his sake, but he never gave her a single expression of appreciation for which she yearned. She regarded herself as the most miserable woman in London. After her death, Carlyle, reading her diary, realized the truth. A friend found him at her grave suffering intense remorse and exclaiming, "If I had only known! If only I had known!"  Men, now is thetime to tell.
